Compact Kitchen Ideas for Modern Apartments

Fix the work triangle first

Sink, hob and fridge should form a short triangle with clear counter run between the sink and hob — that stretch is where actual cooking happens. Aim for at least 600 mm of uninterrupted counter on the hob side.

Layouts that suit small kitchens

  • Single wall with a tall unit — best under 60 sqft, keeps circulation clear.
  • L-shape — the workhorse; puts sink and hob on different legs.
  • Parallel (galley) — efficient if the gap between counters is 900–1100 mm; less if you want two cooks.
  • L with a peninsula — adds a breakfast edge without a full island.

Storage that earns its space

  1. Deep drawers instead of shutters below the counter — you see everything without kneeling.
  2. A pull-out pantry for dry goods, 300 mm wide.
  3. Corner carousel or magic corner so the dead corner works.
  4. Tall unit to the ceiling for appliances and bulk buys.
  5. A dedicated waste segregation pull-out — wet, dry, recyclables.

Materials that survive Indian cooking

Boiling-water-proof plywood carcass with a laminate or acrylic finish, quartz or granite counter, and a full-height glass or large-format tile backsplash behind the hob. Skip open shelves above the hob; oil finds everything.

Ventilation is not optional

A 90 cm chimney with 1200 m³/hr suction, ducted out — not recirculating — plus a window or exhaust fan for cross draft.

Small moves with big effect

Under-cabinet LED strip, a single-lever tall-neck tap, light upper cabinets with a darker base, and no more than two finishes.
