Sustainable Construction Materials to Know

Sustainable has to mean available and costed
A material only counts if a Bangalore contractor can source it, place it and warranty it. These do.
Walling
- AAC blocks — a third the weight of solid concrete blocks, better thermal resistance, faster masonry, less mortar. They need thin-bed adhesive and careful chasing for conduits.
- Fly-ash bricks — consistent size, less water absorption than table-moulded bricks, and they divert an industrial waste stream.
- Stabilised mud blocks — excellent for compound walls and low-rise; needs skilled masonry and good roof overhangs.
Concrete
Partial cement replacement with fly ash or GGBS lowers embodied carbon, improves workability and reduces heat of hydration — useful for large rafts. Mix design and curing discipline matter more than the label.
Roof and envelope
Cool roof coatings or broken-china finishes cut top-floor temperature meaningfully. Shading devices, deeper overhangs and double-glazed or laminated units on west faces do more for comfort than any HVAC upgrade.
Water and waste
Rainwater harvesting with a recharge pit sized to your roof area, a dual-plumbing line for treated water reuse in flushing and landscape, and a compact STP where the project size justifies it.
Timber and finishes
FSC-certified or plantation timber, low-VOC paints, and locally quarried stone to cut transport emissions.
What to ask your builder
Request the mix design, the block test certificates and the material source list. UrbanEarth shares these on request for every construction project we execute.
